October Tradition

I'll admit, this looks pretty gross, but smells yummy!
Hanging ghosts

It seems like most of our family traditions take place in the fall. Maybe that's why it's my favorite season. Last Sunday, we all went outside and worked on the house a bit. Rob pressure washed the front of the house. Olivia and I washed the windows and cleaned up the dried up flowers in the flower bed. We trimmed back our lavender and Rob pruned some trees. When we were all done we got to get out some early Halloween decorations. It's become a tradition for her to help Daddy hang the mini ghosts on our pine tree.
I came in and started a pot of my favorite fall scent. Maybe everybody does this, but in case you've never done, you have to try it!
Fill a saucepan with water. Add apple slices (core and all) ( I use Olivia's leftovers or old apples that have gotten soft or bruised) Add a cinnamon stick or two (I get a huge pack at the dollar store) A few whole or ground cloves and lots of ground cinnamon (again, dollar store for this-save the Schilling for recipes)
Bring to boil, then simmer on low as long as you want. It makes the whole house smell yummy and happy. I just leave the pot to cool and use it again until the apples get too gross and gooey.
I used to use Pumpkin or apple spice candles but they can smell so fake sometimes. This mixture just smells like you are baking something good, even if you're not!

I LOVE this time of year too. I've been doing the apple thing since I lived at mom and dad's. I bake so much more now that it's cold outside, too. The house always smells so warm and inviting. I really miss you and wish we could bake together. And then eat whatever we made, of course!!!
